Heavy with child upon entering the gates of Bethlehem, Mary knew her womb would bear the child no longer. Taking the only thing available to them, Joseph tenderly helped her as she gave birth to Jesus, the child who entered this world as all men do, completely bare and helpless, dependent on parents to give it food and clothing.
