SIZE OF A HOUSE DOES NOT MAKE A HOME

mirror

YARD SALE TODAY – ANTIQUES, COLLECTIBLES, MEMORABILIA

Someone had hand painted a picture on a mirror.  Curious, I picked it up. Note on back:  OUR HOME 1928-1936.  SHARECROPPED FOR EDWARDS.  CYRUS & LUCY BORN HERE.   JUDITH LIVED WITH US.  HAPPY TIMES. ALL GONE 1936.  NOW I’M ALONE, 2500 SQ FT HOUSE.  THE SIZE OF A HOUSE DOES NOT MAKE A HOME.  ALICE, 1977.

“Who was Alice?” I asked.

“She lived here before we came.   Lonely old woman. She lived here alone for many years.  Her first house burned.  She was the only one to survive.”

“Three dollars.  Thanks.”

I’ve hung her picture.  I need her wisdom.

About oneta hayes

ABOUT ME Hello. To various folks I am Neat’nee, Mom, Grandma Neta, Gramma, Aunt Neta, Aunt Noni, Aunt Neno, and Aunt Neto (lots of varieties from little nieces and nephews). To some I’m more like “Didn’t you used to be my teacher?” or “Don’t I know you from someplace?” To you, perhaps, I am a Fellow Blogger. Not “fellow” like a male or a guy, but “fellow” like a companion or an adventurer. I would choose to be Grandma Blogger, and have you pull up a chair, my website before you, while I tell you of some days of yore. I have experienced life much differently than most of you. It was and is a good life. I hope to share nuggets of appreciation for those who have gone before me and those who come after me. By necessity you are among those who come after me and I will tell you of those who came before. Once upon a time in a little house on a prairie - oops, change that lest I commit plagiarism - and change that “house on the prairie” to “dugout on the prairie.” So my story begins...

This is so true and applies equally to our cars.

  2. Love this. Really great wisdom.

    Blessings, grace and peace.

  3. pranabaxom says:

What a heartbreaking story and so much truth in those words. The four walls does not make a house a home.

    • oneta hayes says:

A home needs people in it. Two will do; more is better. But people alone still do not make a home. A home will have some strife but it must have some loving interaction.

  4. Faye says:

This is a powerfully written true reflection of a life truth. Thank you.

  5. pranabaxom says:

“some loving interaction” – that’s the key.

Oh, this is so sad. What a lonely life.

This was so full of pathos, well done

  8. jillyfunnell says:

A tragedy. Home should be where the heart is but her heart was broken in 1936.

  9. abhiray59 says:

Mirror actually telling history. Nice memorabilia of times gone by.

  10. A tragedy remembered on the back of a mirror in few words. Nicely done, Oneta.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle
