VITAL CHOICE

telephone booth

I was being chauffeured in a vehicle build for ten

I sat alone on the back seat, weary without and within.

When I glimpsed in the whiteness an old telephone booth

It served as a reminder of a choice made in my youth.

Yes, the image triggered a memory of a scene from long ago

The booth at the corner of Main and Laurel, with sun instead of snow.

I put a quarter in the slot and got a dime and nickle back,

Dialed the number,  Ash-6489, the call was answered by Jack.

“Jack, I’ve made my choice,” I said with a sigh,

(I silently sniffed and wiped a tear from my eye.)

“Now don’t you be sad –

You’re the best friend that I’ve ever had.

But I’ve decided not to marry you.”

He answered softly, “What will you do?

You know I love you. Honey.”

“I’ve decided to marry Milton, he has lots of money.”

The pain I caused Jack on that day,

Has returned to me in an unexpected way.

My career-driven husband makes money near and far.

As I travel all alone in this luxurious car.

About oneta hayes

ABOUT ME Hello. To various folks I am Neat’nee, Mom, Grandma Neta, Gramma, Aunt Neta, Aunt Noni, Aunt Neno, and Aunt Neto (lots of varieties from little nieces and nephews). To some I’m more like “Didn’t you used to be my teacher?” or “Don’t I know you from someplace?” To you, perhaps, I am a Fellow Blogger. Not “fellow” like a male or a guy, but “fellow” like a companion or an adventurer. I would choose to be Grandma Blogger, and have you pull up a chair, my website before you, while I tell you of some days of yore. I have experienced life much differently than most of you. It was and is a good life. I hope to share nuggets of appreciation for those who have gone before me and those who come after me. By necessity you are among those who come after me and I will tell you of those who came before. Once upon a time in a little house on a prairie - oops, change that lest I commit plagiarism - and change that “house on the prairie” to “dugout on the prairie.” So my story begins...

We drink our poison with glee

Oneta, thank you so much for joining the Challenge. You have created a lovely story. I felt said for this woman and Jack then much more so at the ending. There is a wise message in your post.

  4. An excellent response to the prompt! Money does not equal happiness. How sad so many do not understand that.

Such a tragedy! Lesson learned too late.

I am always full of admiration that no matter what writing challenge you accept you always bring a thoughtful message. Thank you. (Once when I was part of a Writers Group I joyfully accepted these challenges. Some folk complained because I could not write to be trendy simply for the violent or the obscene. I became a blogger so I could identify my own blog and write only from the perspective of who I am. I believe this is what you do so profoundly.

That’s kind and encouraging; thanks, Faye. We find satisfaction in being the child of God, with our own callings and talents. You do a great job of what he has you doing. Your love and testimony of God shows in your writings. I am agog at having been given such a love for writing – something I was so defeated at for more than half my life. He certainly moves his children from glory to glory. Almost all the challenge things, I have to have Him direct me to any “reason” for writing. Lord Jesus, why should anyone spend their time reading what I am writing. Hopefully someone some where is a receiver. Perhaps not always in what we consider “sacred” but teaching others to broaden talents in an educational way. Then each instrument can play its part in God’s orchestra. I have so many bloggers who inspire me and lead me on, so many I can never aspire to equal in their knowledge and abilities. Many are so intelligent. Mine are so simple. At this point I can only do “simple.” 😀 Hugs to you, dear Faye.
