Man can know no more about God than what God reveals to him. But man can know much less about God than God has revealed. Hosea records God’s disapproval of those who do not know him, “Hear the word of the Lord…for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor KNOWLEDGE OF GOD in the land….My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge… In Hosea 6:6 God indicates that his people are just routinely going through the ritual of worship and sacrifice, as he says, “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the KNOWLEDGE OF GOD more than burnt offerings.” God does not reveal himself to us all at once. He reveals himself in “increments” when we walk in obedience and faith, hunger for him, and seek to know Him. He wants to give further revelation of Himself. 

Often, however, as with the children of Israel, this revelation occurs in the midst of a crisis; and logically, crises are avoided as much as possible! Or, the solutions are often found in “covenants with the inhabitants of the land,” in other words, by the resources available in one’s culture; for example, we trust in our savings account, medical science, government, or insurance.
