Howie Smith, senior deacon in the Community Church called Pastor Peter P. Pagent.
“The boat’s at the church all set to go. Shorten your sermon. I leave by 11:45.”
“Fret not thyself; I’ll quit before 11:45.”
“OK, see you in the morning. Take a bag lunch.”
…..Voice from Heaven: “What if my message is not finished?”
“Uhh, uhh. You see, Lord, Howie is getting pretty old, he might fall in and drown if someone is not there to rescue him. Not exactly “ox in the ditch” but pretty close, isn’t it? And we will say grace for the food.”

ABOUT ME
Hello. To various folks I am Neat’nee, Mom, Grandma Neta, Gramma, Aunt Neta, Aunt Noni, Aunt Neno, and Aunt Neto (lots of varieties from little nieces and nephews). To some I’m more like “Didn’t you used to be my teacher?” or “Don’t I know you from someplace?” To you, perhaps, I am a Fellow Blogger. Not “fellow” like a male or a guy, but “fellow” like a companion or an adventurer. I would choose to be Grandma Blogger, and have you pull up a chair, my website before you, while I tell you of some days of yore. I have experienced life much differently than most of you. It was and is a good life. I hope to share nuggets of appreciation for those who have gone before me and those who come after me. By necessity you are among those who come after me and I will tell you of those who came before. Once upon a time in a little house on a prairie - oops, change that lest I commit plagiarism - and change that “house on the prairie” to “dugout on the prairie.” So my story begins...
This is delightful! Such a great take on the prompt! Kudos.
Thank you. Alicia. Sweet words.
Any excuse to get out church early, if you ask me.
Some in every crowd but it is not supposed to be the pastor and deacon. 😀
Very cute and a commentary on how we all rationalise what we want. Nicely done!
Isn’t that the truth? And often it can be “proved by the scriptures.” HaHa
Anything is possible. 🙂
Just takes preplanning.
Gave me a smile. Being a PK, I could. think of at least two situations like this in my dad’s ministry.
Thanks for sharing that response. I’m a deacon’s kid. 😀 They both did something right, however, to get us where we are. I’d say they were not hypocrites, just men! LOL
Surely He will be flexible, they deserve an early finish once in a while!
Any earthly excuse is just that – an earthly excuse. Something about excuses often seems to border on lies.
Talking the talk and walking the walk are two very different things. The Pastor knows the difference. God taught him well. I like the message of your story, Oneta.
Thanks for the comment, msjadeli. You are kind to make comments to so many FF entries. Bless you.
Oneta, I enjoy reading the stories and I pretty much comment on all stories each week unless the writers never comment on mine. Then I might read them but not comment. As Rochelle has said a time or two, “reciprocation is the life of this challenge.” (paraphrasing)
LOL!
Oh dear
Thanks for the comment. Laughing with you.
