AN EXPLANATION, plus “dependent”

Note on Passing Years posted Oct. 21  I found some notes the other day which show that I wrote a short form of “Passing Years” sometime before my 70th birthday (I think).  During the time I was working on my doctoral thesis regarding the Jehovah names of God, I realized that He had been evident to me in all the roles I mention: Redeemer, Victor, Healer, Peace, Guide, Holiness, Friend.  So I added more to the poem and included it as the epilogue in my thesis.

I know most of you realized as you read it, that it was more to me than just a “poetry” exercise.  I have told family members that I want it used as a part of my funeral when that time comes.

The poem is not copyrighted, and I never plan to do so.  If it can be a blessing to you in any way, you are welcome to use it.  Please do acknowledge me as the writer, however.  It is very special to me-and, I hope this doesn’t sound weird, but I believe to Jesus also.

i’m not good enough

i’m not strong enough.

i’m not rich enough.

i’m not smart enough.

In fact, i’m not good, strong, rich, or smart.

But i’ll make it, because HE is!

About oneta hayes

ABOUT ME Hello. To various folks I am Neat’nee, Mom, Grandma Neta, Gramma, Aunt Neta, Aunt Noni, Aunt Neno, and Aunt Neto (lots of varieties from little nieces and nephews). To some I’m more like “Didn’t you used to be my teacher?” or “Don’t I know you from someplace?” To you, perhaps, I am a Fellow Blogger. Not “fellow” like a male or a guy, but “fellow” like a companion or an adventurer. I would choose to be Grandma Blogger, and have you pull up a chair, my website before you, while I tell you of some days of yore. I have experienced life much differently than most of you. It was and is a good life. I hope to share nuggets of appreciation for those who have gone before me and those who come after me. By necessity you are among those who come after me and I will tell you of those who came before. Once upon a time in a little house on a prairie - oops, change that lest I commit plagiarism - and change that “house on the prairie” to “dugout on the prairie.” So my story begins...

Oneta, I have copied your poem (your name included) and put it in my files. Since I “run around” with old people, I think I will be reading it often. Thank you for it. Also, I, too, am interested in the names of God. Did you ever study “Yahweh-Shammah”? Here is where my study led me:

I like it very much! it simply puts all the truth right there 😀

Judy, I went over to read your post of “names.” You hooked me right off; I found it enticing to read. Yes, I do have a unit on Jehovah-Shammah. It will be posted in my static pages under God’s Provision. I interpret “God is There” in a way to show he is our Friend. He “hangs around” for the purpose of communicating with us as friend to friend. As my friend, I have no fear of Him thinking I am being disrespectful with saying He “hangs around.” He is amazing and He is Here/He is There. I am posting in the order they are revealed in the Bible. I will post My Guide (Rohi), Our Righteousness (tsidkenu), My Friend (shammah). I am posting the eight names that shows God’s dealing/relationship to man.

Thanks for referring me to the static page. I’m glad it is an ongoing page. I related Yahweh-Shammah to my childhood raised in an alcoholic family. I have done a lot of thinking about God having always been there and there for me.

Did you publish your doctoral dissertation, as I would love to read it if it’s permissable. Or maybe someday you might put some of it online? (OR have you, and I’ve missed it??) Beautiful poem, and YES, I think He is smiling because of it!

dawn liz, I had to have copies bound at first for myself and for the univ. library files. I had about a dozen made after that. I really don’t know what happened to most of them. I do have the official copies signed by the doctoral committee. I am going through it at this time (at least I was before blogging began taking so much time!) in order to remove some of the research, footnotes, and that kind of thing. I want it to be less “scholarly;’ and, consequently, more apt to be read by my family. You’d be surprised how fast many people run from the idea of a dissertation! Actually I think it will be more interesting and move faster. When I get that done, I want to put it on power sticks for my family and others who are interested. Not as expensive that way. I have never e-mailed a manuscript but I guess I could. Others e-mail manuscripts to publishers, don’t they? Actually the manuscript was written as a teaching tool for junior high students so it is not at all difficult to read even in it “doctoral” form. However, I don’t know much about copyright laws. I did quote quite a bit in order to document the material. I know it was all right to use in the form that I did; however, I’m sure it could not be used for sale in it’s original form. The chapters I have on my pages have been streamlined and would be copyrighted only to the degree that it is my original writing and belongs to me. There are chapters “God Values His Name” and “God Delegates His Name.” and others that were an absolute joy for me to research and write.

  6. Because he is, I can face tomorrow. Through Christ we are rich, strong and smart. Lovely poem

Thank you for being what God planned for you. He does take care of his people, making up so much of what we lack on our own.

It is terrible…to be in that state of mind – to think that because someone else is, you are. But that’s a how a lot of Indian women still think of themselves – and it’s sad.

Oneta, Congratulations! I am nominating you for the Seal Of Approval Blogger Recognition Award. The award rules can be viewed @

Thank you for the nomination. I will get around to my acceptance of some awards hopefully before too long. I am preparing a list of sites for nomination at this time. Thanks for reading me and promoting my blog in this way. I have enjoyed your writings also.
